Legal Requirements To Set Up Your Signage Company In Dubai

Starting a signage company in Dubai means following certain steps laid out by the local authorities. Each step must be completed to move forward with business activities. These steps are in place to ensure the business operates according to the local commercial structure and standards.

Select the business activity:

The first step to start a Dubai signage company is choosing the correct business activity from the list provided by the Dubai Department of Economic Development (DED). Signage-related activities are listed under advertising services or signage installation and production. The exact activity chosen will affect the license and permissions.

Choose the legal structure:

You must pick a business structure such as sole proprietorship, limited liability company (LLC), or civil company. This structure will depend on the number of partners and the type of ownership. An LLC is usually selected for signage companies working on larger projects.

Register the trade name:

A trade name should be registered through the DED. The name must follow Dubai’s naming rules and must not match any other existing business. The name should be clear and not include any symbols or terms restricted by local law.

Apply for the trade licence:

A trade licence is the main document necessary to operate. This is obtained from the DED if you plan to set up on the mainland. For free zone setups, the licence is issued by the respective free zone authority. The licence will state the activity, location, and type of ownership.

Find a business location:

A valid commercial address is necessary for your signage company. This could be an office, workshop, or studio. The lease agreement must be submitted as part of the licence application. It is often processed through the Ejari system in Dubai.

Get external approvals if necessary:

In some cases, approvals from other bodies may be asked for. For signage work, this could include approval from Dubai Municipality or other regulatory departments, depending on the size or type of signage you plan to design or install.

Visa and labor steps:

After the licence is issued, you can apply for visas for yourself and staff. You must also register with the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation and the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs. This step allows the company to legally hire workers.
